Building confidenceBuilding confidence

Our goal is to help children grow in confidence, discipline and a love for music that lasts a lifetime.Confidence, focus and joy.

The violin is one of the few instruments a child can genuinely begin at three, and our lessons for toddlers (3 to 5 years old) are built around that. Our artistic director, Céline Gaurier-Joubert, started the violin at three herself, encouraged by her violinist father, and counts it among the privileges of her childhood. Tiny instruments, short lessons and plenty of play are what make it work at that age.

Our violin lessons for children are open to all children from 5 to 12 years old. After the piano, the violin is the instrument most young children study — partly because it opens the door to playing with other people, in an orchestra or an ensemble, far sooner than most instruments do. Posture, bow hold and intonation are established from the first lessons, because they are difficult to correct later.

Reserved for girls and boys aged 13 to 18, our violin lessons for teenagers welcome complete beginners and accomplished players alike. Whether your child is working towards grades and auditions or simply wants to play well, lessons are shaped around where they are and what they want to play.

How violin lessons work

  1. 1
Tell us the instrument and your child’s age

We match your child with a teacher who specialises in that age group, not with whoever is free.

  2. 2
Choose a weekly day and time

Lessons are one to one and run weekly on a set day and time, subject to availability.

  3. 3
Start in any week of the year

There is no need to wait for September, or for a term to begin.

  4. 4
    Pay monthly, in advance

Lesson durations: 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending on age. Notice of four teaching weeks can be given from the end of the first month, so the shortest commitment is two months.

Violin lessons in Fitzrovia, Central London

Our violin lessons are held in Fitzrovia (W1) and in studios across Central London, taught one to one by instructors who specialise in teaching young players.

The violin rewards precision, so lessons balance technique, ear training and repertoire rather than drilling one at the expense of the others — a well-held bow and a well-tuned ear are what make the music possible. Instruments come in fractional sizes, so even the youngest children play something that fits them properly.

Lessons run weekly on a set day and time, and children can join at any point in the year rather than waiting for a term to begin.

Common questions

Where are the violin lessons held?

In Fitzrovia, W1 — a few minutes from Oxford Circus and Great Portland Street — and in studios across Central London.

Who are the teachers?

Experienced performers and teachers who have studied under some of Europe’s finest musicians, and who specialise in teaching children rather than adults.

How are the lessons structured?

Weekly, on a set day and time. Each lesson builds technique, musical expression and confidence together rather than drilling one at the expense of the others, and the balance is matched to your child rather than to a fixed syllabus.

How long is each violin lesson?

Lessons are 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending on age. Shorter lessons usually suit younger beginners; longer lessons suit children who are progressing towards more demanding repertoire.

When can my child start?

At any point in the year. Lessons are weekly on a set day and time, and are paid monthly.

Does my child need to have played before?

No. Complete beginners are welcome, and lessons are tailored to the level your child is starting from.

What if my child is not especially talented?

Then they are like almost every child who starts. Talent is not the entry requirement — attention is, and a good teacher builds that. Children are never judged or criticised here, and progress is measured against where your child began rather than against anybody else.

What is the minimum commitment?

Two months. Lessons are paid monthly, and notice of four teaching weeks can be given from the end of the first month — so the shortest possible commitment is two months.

Do we need a violin at home?

Yes. Your child needs an instrument to practise on between lessons, and having a good one from the first week makes a real difference to how much they enjoy it. If you are not sure what to buy, ask us and we will recommend something.

Can my child take ABRSM or Trinity exams?

Yes, and they are optional. Grades give a course structure and something to aim at, and the certificate at the end is worth more to a child than adults tend to expect.

How much should my child practise?

Fifteen minutes a day is plenty to begin with, rising as they get older and more able. Daily and short beats weekly and long.

Can I sit in on the lesson?

Yes. It helps you understand what the teacher is asking for, which makes practice at home easier. If your child concentrates better alone with the teacher, that is worth respecting too.

Do you offer a discount for siblings?

No. Our teachers are paid for their expertise and their time, and a sibling lesson takes as much of both as any other.

A child who learns the violin develops three gifts for life:
a trained ear, the discipline to master something difficult,
and the ability to express what words cannot.
These are gifts that remain long after childhood.
