The flute is an ideal first woodwind instrument, and our lessons for toddlers (3 to 5 years old) begin where small hands and short arms allow — usually on the recorder, which teaches breath, fingers and reading before the flute itself becomes practical. It is the same musical foundation, on an instrument that fits.
Children love the flute, and our lessons are open to all children from 5 to 12 years old. It is the bird in Peter and the Wolf and the instrument of Peter Pan, and that is often where the interest starts — but it is also a principal voice of the orchestra, which means a child who plays it well is rarely short of people to play with. Tone and breath control are built patiently, because on the flute they are everything.
Reserved for girls and boys aged 13 to 18, our flute lessons for teenagers cover both the classical and the jazz repertoire. Some arrive wanting the Poulenc Sonata or the Khachaturian Concerto; others have heard Jeremy Steig and want to improvise. Lessons follow the student’s ambition rather than a fixed syllabus.

Flute lessons in Fitzrovia, Central London
Our flute lessons are held in Fitzrovia (W1) and in studios across Central London, taught one to one by instructors who specialise in teaching young players.
Everything on the flute rests on the breath, so lessons build tone, air control and posture alongside technique and repertoire rather than rushing past them. Beginners are welcome, and curved head joints mean younger children can start on a real flute before their arms are long enough for a straight one.
Lessons run weekly on a set day and time, and children can join at any point in the year rather than waiting for a term to begin.

How are the lessons structured?
Weekly, on a set day and time. Each lesson builds technique, musical expression and confidence together rather than drilling one at the expense of the others, and the balance is matched to your child rather than to a fixed syllabus.
How long is each flute lesson?
Lessons are 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending on age. Shorter lessons usually suit younger beginners; longer lessons suit children who are progressing towards more demanding repertoire.
When can my child start?
At any point in the year. Lessons are weekly on a set day and time, and are paid monthly.
Does my child need to have played before?
No. Complete beginners are welcome, and lessons are tailored to the level your child is starting from.
What if my child is not especially talented?
Then they are like almost every child who starts. Talent is not the entry requirement — attention is, and a good teacher builds that. Children are never judged or criticised here, and progress is measured against where your child began rather than against anybody else.
What is the minimum commitment?
Two months. Lessons are paid monthly, and notice of four teaching weeks can be given from the end of the first month — so the shortest possible commitment is two months.
Do we need a flute at home?
Yes. Your child needs an instrument to practise on between lessons, and having a good one from the first week makes a real difference to how much they enjoy it. If you are not sure what to buy, ask us and we will recommend something.
Can my child take ABRSM or Trinity exams?
Yes, and they are optional. Grades give a course structure and something to aim at, and the certificate at the end is worth more to a child than adults tend to expect.
How much should my child practise?
Fifteen minutes a day is plenty to begin with, rising as they get older and more able. Daily and short beats weekly and long.
Can I sit in on the lesson?
Yes. It helps you understand what the teacher is asking for, which makes practice at home easier. If your child concentrates better alone with the teacher, that is worth respecting too.
Do you offer a discount for siblings?
No. Our teachers are paid for their expertise and their time, and a sibling lesson takes as much of both as any other.
